Linux is the best-known and most-used open source operating system. As an operating system, Linux is software that sits underneath all of the other software on a computer, receiving requests from those programs and relaying these requests to the computer’s hardware.

Squid Server

Squid is a proxy server and web cache daemon. It has a wide variety of uses, from speeding up a web server by caching repeated requests; to caching web, DNS and other computer network lookups for a group of people sharing network resources; to aiding security by filtering traffic. Although primarily used for HTTP and FTP, Squid includes limited support for several other protocols including TLS, SSL, Internet Gopher and HTTPS.

Samba Server

Samba is a free software re-implementation of the SMB/CIFS networking protocol, Samba provides file and print services for various Microsoft Windows clients and can integrate with a Windows Server domain, either as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) or as a domain member. It can also be part of an Active Directory domain.

Backup Software and Long File Names

Long file names or LFN, do they exist is often the question asked in the business sector as many times the user may not see them. The answer is they do exist and can cause great damage and stress to the user as data can be lost unknowingly when the user makes a schedule backup.

The concept of long file names or LFN is not new as it has been around for years in the computer world. LFN occurs as a result of Windows following a hierarchy when saving and naming files. For example one file is saved in a specific folder and this folder is further saved within another folder, which in turn is also saved under other folder’s name. In time, the user will have a branching system of files buried within mounts of folders. To handle this situation Windows continues to add on the file name in order to handle this increasing number of files within specific folders. Another example can be seen when adding websites to your favorites. Most cases the website already has a long name, Windows just adds to the current name making the file name longer.

Most applications can handle the old file name system that allowed only 250 characters. Today, Microsoft has implemented the NTFS file system that allows a maximum of about 32767 characters in the file name.

cwRsync – https://www.itefix.no/i2/cwrsync

cwRsync is a packaging of Rsync for Windows with a client GUI. You can use cwRsync for fast remote file backup and synchronization. Rsync uses the Rsync algorithm which provides a very fast method for bringing remote files into sync. It does this by sending just the differences in the files across the link, without requiring that both sets of files are present at one of the ends of the link beforehand. At first glance this may seem impossible because the calculation of diffs between two files normally requires local access to both files.

ALL Way Sync – https://allwaysync.com/

It uses innovative synchronization algorithms to synchronize your data between desktop PCs, laptops, USB drives, remote FTP/SFTP servers, different online data storages and more. Encrypted archives are supported. Allway Sync combines bulletproof reliability with extremely easy-to-use interface.

FreeFile Sync – http://freefilesync.sourceforge.net/

FreeFileSync helps you synchronize files and synchronize folders being a completely free Open Source software. Its design is focussed on user productivity and runtime performance to help get your work done quickly without getting in the way.

DeltaCopy – http://www.aboutmyip.com/AboutMyXApp/DeltaCopy.jsp

In general terms, DeltaCopy is an open source, fast incremental backup program. Let’s say you have to backup one file that is 500 MB every night. A normal file copy would copy the entire file even if a few bytes have changed. DeltaCopy, on the other hand, would only copy the part of file that has actually been modified. This reduces the data transfer to just a small fraction of 500 MB saving time and network bandwidth.

XXCopy – http://www.xxcopy.com/

XXCOPY is a boldly extended XCOPY. First there was COPY, then came XCOPY. Now with the exploding number of files, everyone needs a tool like XXCOPY.
